Thinking about storing solar power? There's never been a better time. NSW now offers two powerful rebate programs to reduce the upfront cost of solar batteries—and you could be eligible for both.
NSW Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Incentive — $1,600 to $2,400 off
Since November 2024, the NSW Government’s Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS) provides rebates between $1,600 and $2,400, depending on battery size (typically 5 kWh to 28 kWh)
If you connect your battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), you can claim an extra $250–$400, up to twice in separate 3‑year intervals
Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program — ~30% Off
Starting July 1, 2025, the Australian Government is offering up to $344 per usable kWh, essentially a 30% subsidy, on home batteries with new or existing.
This federal rebate can be combined with the NSW VPP incentive—so your total savings can reach several thousand dollars
Who's Eligible?
These rebates are available to NSW homeowners and small businesses if:
Your system is installed by an Accredited Certificate Provider (ACP),
The battery system is VPP-compatible,
Nominal battery capacity is between 2 kWh and 28 kWh,
The battery includes a minimum warranty and a guaranteed energy throughput standard
Even if you claimed the earlier NSW battery discount, you may still qualify for the VPP incentive, so check eligibility carefully - CHECK HERE
Example Savings
Battery Size | NSW VPP Incentive | Federal Rebate | Estimated Total Rebate |
13.5 kWh | ~$742 | ~$4,644 | ~$5,400+ |
10 kWh | ~$550 | ~$3,440 | ~$4,000+ |
5 kWh | ~$275 | ~$1,720 | ~$2,000 |
These savings could cut your payback time down to around 3–4 years—and significantly boost savings over the system’s lifespan
How These Rebates Benefit Northern NSW Residents
Residents of Murwillumbah, Tweed Heads, Kingscliff, Ballina, and surrounding areas can take advantage of:
Immediate upfront savings on battery installations,
Additional VPP income during peak demand periods,
A more reliable, resilient energy setup with battery backup,
Reduced reliance on the grid—especially during storms or blackouts.
